Abstract
Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are a promising next-generationenergy-storagesolution to complement or replace current battery technologies inthe wave of automotive electrification. Especially SSBs using sulfidesolid electrolytes (SEs) hold great potential; however, (electro)chemicalinstability when in contact with layered oxide cathode active materials(CAMs) remains an obstacle to further implementation. SE degradationoccurring during cycling adversely affects the ion/electron transportand may possibly cause mechanical failure. In the present work, aprotective surface coating composed of Li2HfO3 and HfO2 nanoparticles (NPs) was produced on the secondaryparticles of a high-capacity LiNi0.85Co0.1Mn0.05O2 (NCM85) CAM to mitigate side reactions andenable robust interfacial charge transfer. HfO2 NPs dispersedin solution served both as a coating material and as a precursor toreact with residual lithium during post-deposition annealing. TheLi(2)HfO(3)/HfO2-coated NCM85 showedmuch improved cycling performance over uncoated CAM in all-inorganicSSB cells with Li6PS5Cl SE and Li4Ti5O12 anode. Thorough characterization usinga series of techniques helped to elucidate the role that the coatingplays in stabilizing interfaces and preserving structural integrityof the cathode.
