Abstract: 

As the negative implications of climate change and high input agriculture have become evident in recent years, agroforestry, i.e. the integration of trees on agricultural land, has garnered renewed scientific and public interest in temperate regions. In response, Justus Liebig University Giessen has started a long-term agroforestry trial with the goal of creating a knowledge base for researchers and practitioners, to advance the implementation of agroforestry across Germany and central Europe. Here we present the research approach and results from the first years after establishment of a silvoarable alley cropping system with fast-growing trees for biomass production, high value timber trees and apple trees for fruit production.
