Abstract
The safety of drinking water in Germany is guaranteed by official surveillance according to the German Drinking Water Directive (Trinkwasserverordnung). Microbial contaminations are usually detected by microbiological methods (culturing of bacteria). Depending on the pathogen species, the time between examination and result might take up to 10 days. Therefore, alternative methods using molecular techniques are being developed and validated. In this review, these methods are described, challenges are discussed and possible future prospects are given.
