Abstract:
This essay explores the questions of what forms of knowledge literature represents or generates, how specifically literary ways of worldmaking (sensu Nelson Goodman) can be described, and what the task of literary studies or philology could and should be. Proceeding from the assumption that literature in general and narratives in particular are one of the most powerful ways of creating storyworlds; worldviews, and forms of life, the essay argues that literary fictions not only represent life and storyworlds, they also exert performative power, i.e. literary ways of worldmaking constitute and indeed 'form' life, storyworlds. worldviews, and knowledge. The essay also aims to outline, in the form of a number of theses, the tasks and perspectives of a life sciences-oriented approach to literary and cultural studies. These programmatic considerations will conclude with a brief plea for and outlook onto the social relevance of such a life science-oriented literary studies, which should restore a sense of complexity by above all reflecting upon its competencies in the analysis of symbolic forms, metaphors, narratives, and other genres, i.e. of literary ways of worldmaking.
