Abstract: 

Background: Despite a widespread distribution of informatics in the field of ophthalmology in the past few years there is a disproportion between the actually implemented information system and the technological possibilities. The development of computer systems and the daily operation of information systems results in possible automation of information processes between clinical institutions and offers a new range of application.

Results: Using the Internet, a public network, is our solution of information exchange between two University Eye Hospitals with regard to the specific data safety regulations of the data security commissioner concerning patient-related data. The connection between the computers works via modem on common telephone lines. Basic requirement for this direct connection is the socalled Internet Protocol (TCP/ IP), which connects different computers in the Internet and allows communication. Because all computers agreed on this: common ''speech'', it is not important, to which kind of computer system a course is shaped for, how the system is connected or on what kind of computer system platform it works.

Conclusion: Electronic mail is sent to anybody in the Internet worldwide in a few minutes. Standard protocols like FTP (File transfer Protocol) or SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) are responsible for data transfer in the Internet. They allow fast data exchange of programms, letters or e. g. digitalized photographs between the own computer and anybody else in the Internet.
