Abstract:
The accelerating change of our civilisation narrows the dimensions of life we control, which results in a "progressive shrinkage of the present". As our scope of action changes, our future becomes increasingly open and hardly predictable. Is Stigler right in claiming that "if problems of economic life changed frequently and radically ... there could not be a science of economics"? This article deals with the significance the "progressive shrinkage of the present" has for economic theory and shows that combining Economic History and the History of Economics there could be a science of economics.
