Abstract:
In spite of numerous studies, standardized scientific data about the nutrient requirements of athletes are still lacking. A further problem is the growing interest in vegetarian diets especially for endurance athletes. During an ultralong distance race (1000 km in 20 days) it was investigated whether an ovo-lacto-vegetarian, wholesome diet was suited to cover the nutritional requirements of endurance athletes. Runners were divided into an ovo-lacto-vegetarian diet group and a regular western diet group. Both diets contained 4500 Kcal per day and showed a relation of carbohydrates:fat:protein of 60:30:10. Runners of each dietary group were free to choose the foods they preferred. The results of the study show, that the meals for endurance athletes consist mainly of nutrient dense complex carbohydrate foods. A higher proportion of complex carbohydrates and high nutrient density especially of snacks have the highest priority in changing dietary habits of endurance athletes. The ovo-lacto-vegetarian, wholesome diet is sufficient to cover the nutritional requirements of endurance athletes at all levels because it is nutrient dense. The intake and absorption of iron has to be observed closely.
