Abstract
The influence of interactions of Cd, Zn, Pb and Hg on the growth of S. cerevisiae was studied. Low Zn concentrations reduce the toxicity of Cd while high Zn concentrations intensify it. Zn does not decrease the growth inhibition by Hg. The actions of Cd and Hg are not changed by Pb, but 5 .times. 10-4 M Pb prevent completely the increase of the growth intensity caused by Zn. Combinations of toxic concentrations of Cd and Hg show a synergistic lengthening of the lag period, but their cumulative influence on the growth rate is lower than the sum of the corresponding inhibition effects.
