Abstract
The influence of bacterial proteins containing different amounts of poly-.beta.-hydroxybutyric acid (PHB) on weight-increase and N-balance of growing rats was studied. Ad lib feeding of the test diet (25% crude protein) the growth rates of the test animals were reduced as compared with the controls (casein diet). Nitrogen-retentions were decreased. Feeding a diet containing more than 27% PHB (critical value) high mortality rates were observed after 2 wk. These effects may be interpreted as a result of a decreased concentration of nutritive substances in the test diets induced by PHB and probably unknown toxic factors in PHB-containing bacterial protein.
