Abstract:
The nutritive value of Hydrogenomonas mutants was tested on suckling piglets and about 8 wk old weaners. In the experiment with piglets (about 8 kg) a ratio containing the Hydrogenomonas mutant 44.9% poly-.beta.-hydroxybutyric-acid (PHB) in dry matter was compared to a isonitrogenous ration with dried skimmed milk (control). The biological value (BV) of the bacterial protein is relatively high with 72% (milk protein BV 90%). The PHB content did not cause a negative effect on the digestibility of crude fat in the ration. The metabolism of fat provided by the ration containing the Hydrogenomonas mutant induced a rise in the amount of unsaturated fatty acids in the liver fat as compared to the skimmed milk ration. The sequence of fatty acids in the ration was adequate to the sequence of unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fatty acids in the fat of the liver. There was no effect of feed-fat on the sequence of fatty acids in the muscle and the kidney depot-fat. No obvious deformations of organs, i.e., liver, muscle and kidney, were observed. About 65% of the PHB consumed was excreted with the feces. Since no PHB residues were found in the critical organs (liver, muscle, kidney) and the kidney depot-fat, probably about 35% of the PHB was metabolized (possibly in the intestinal tract). The BV of the Hydrogenomonas-mutant "PHB-free'' for the weaners (about 18 kg) was 64%.
