Abstract:
The former and recent distribution of the pearl mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera, is described. The species-area in Europe is regarded in detail and the history of distribution in this region is reconstructed. In the Vogelsberg [West Germany] the mussel was and is restricted to the basaltic area. In the rivers where the pearl mussel can be found, it is absent when the river leaves the basalt and enters the colored sandstone formation. Distribution, morphology and ecology were studied to determine if there are special varities of this mussel in the atypical locality. Usually the pearl mussel inhabits rivers on granite, colored sandstone or rocks other than basalt. The conchological results showed that specimens were not different from those in other biotopes. The ecological conditions can be compared with those of streams in granite and the differences are only small. The pearl mussel has diminished in most parts of the rivers in the Vogelsberg and there are only a few individuals left. These are mostly old. Young mussels or glochidia could not be found in the last 4 yr.
