Abstract

Rachel Portman is one of the few female film composers who is nevertheless highly recognized in this male dominated domain. This paper highlights her compositional output and creative intentions against the backdrop of common prejudices concerning female film scoring. While contextualizing stereotypical representations of the cultural categories of »feminine« and »masculine« in film composition, psychology and music history, an analysis of Portman’s score for Chocolat (UK/USA 2000) compares characters’ leitmotifs to clichés of female and male melodies and evaluates their function in the dramaturgy and narration of the movie as a whole.
