Abstract

Price fairness is increasingly being discussed by the media. In the debate about so-called bargain offers and a lack of appreciation for food, however, the question remains unanswered as to what this often-quoted keyword actually means. The study aims to gain new insights into the understanding of price fairness along the value chain for foods in Germany using a qualitative research design. For this purpose, a media analysis and eight expert interviews are conducted. According to the results of the research, a fair price is characterized by the fact that it covers at least the costs of production, is fair for all actors along the value chain, is a sign of appreciation, should be calculated based on the costs of the farmer and is based on a partnership between producer and retailer. Price fairness in foods is discussed in particular in connection with unfair trading practices and the question of what contribution the parties involved can and should make.
